“Coping with Clothing” (1994)

In her first work, “Coping with Clothing,” Barbara uses her closet as a diary for her emotions as she comes to terms with the death of her parents.

In this piece, Barbara explores the loss of her mother as she prepares to cook chicken the way her mother used to, without her mother.

In “Dress Me,” Barbara explores the conflicting desires of mothers and daughters to nurture yet separate from each other. “Zip me up, tuck me in, tell me what to do. Dress me,” she wrote.
